Linux Training Materials ReleasedPRESS RELEASE — 7 MAY 1999 GBdirect, Europe's premier supplier of Linux training, used today's National Linux Conference (see www.netproject.com) to announce the forthcoming release of their Linux training materials as open source software. The first materials to be released will be modules from GBdirect's flagship Linux Systems course. The core modules of this course were developed in preparation for Dell's global roll-out of Linux systems on 6th May 1999. Modules can, however, be combined to produce anything from 2 to 5 days of GNU/Linux training. The main customers for the course are corporate users who need to start working quickly and effectively on UNIX/Linux systems. All of them are carefully designed to deliver skills and knowledge which apply to any UNIX system. They will, therefore, be useful to any existing or potential UNIX user. Others in the corporate training sector may be surprised by GBdirect's decision, but Mike Banahan (Managing Director) responds with absolute confidence. He claims: ``We're not frightened of competition from anybody using our materials, because the real value of our training lies in the people who produce the materials and deliver the courses.'' According to Mike, the open source model of software development is just as applicable to training materials as it is to computer programs. He says ``The open source movement produces the best software, because thousands of people continually improve on the work of original authors. We want to give something back to the community which gives us this software, but we fully expect people to suggest useful improvements to the materials we are releasing. A basic premise of open source, is that even the best solution can be improved upon''. Further details at: www.linuxtraining.co.uk |
CSS/XSLT/XHTML Design at The RegisterGBdirect staff recently completed an overhaul of the content management system (CMS) and website design for The Register. Every user should notice the aesthetic improvements, but we hope that most will also experience significant improvements in usability and performance as a result of the shift to open standards compliant HTML, CSS and XSLT. A brief description of the technologies involved is available and you may be interested in this rather approving account from The Web Standards Project. Journalists and editors are already noticing a dramatic improvement in the usability of the content management system. If you are interested in a similarly high usability, standards compliant, website design please contact our development team at development@gbdirect.co.uk. If you would like to learn how to do something similar yourself, take a look at our website design training course and our Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) training course. |
